A teacher (mu‘allim) in the Islamic intellectual and educational tradition is a guide (murshid) a role model, a mentor (murabbi) who communicates knowledge ‘ilm (dhikr, tilawah of ayat); elaborates through textual studies (ta’lim of Kitab); assists in personal, intellectual and ethical development (tazkiyah, rububiyh); and shares in wisdom, (hikmah) and comprehension (tafhim) of the issues.
The empiricist knowledge paradigm claims to be value-natural. Islam on the contrary wants a professional to internalize ethical values while enhancing skills in a given field of knowledge. To let a student, internalize universal Islamic values, a teacher must have conceptual clarity, authentic knowledge, and ethically inspired conduct and behavior.
This Postgraduate course in Professional Ethics and morality helps in understanding the role of ethical values in research, teaching, and mentoring.
